In the past few hours the first trailer of the official Borderlands movie has been released: unfortunately we still have no indication on the release date beyond “soon” (previous official plans indicated August 9 in the USA), but for fans of Gearbox’s FPS franchise it seems that the title promises well: a stellar cast, a setting faithful to the game and above all that mix of action, violence and over-the-top humor that make it so instantly recognizable. Among the actors participating in the project we mention:

Cate Blanchett as outlaw Lilith
Jack Black as Claptrap
Kevin Hart as Roland
Edgar Ramírez as Atlas
Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina
Florian Munteanu as Krieg
Gina Gershon as Mad Moxxi
Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis

The film has been in the works for almost 10 years now; After a few unsuccessful attempts, work with the current team started in 2020. At the direction we find Eli Roth, who has made a name for himself above all with horror and splatter (in fact his Cabin Fever and Hostel) and has also starred in several films, in particular Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds as Donnie “The Jewish Bear” Donowitz; Roth also co-wrote the screenplay with Craig Mazin (Chernobyl).

Filming had already ended in June 2021, but in early 2023 it was announced that some scenes would be reshot. Eli Roth already had other commitments and so he was replaced by Tim Miller (director of the first Deadpool and Terminator: Dark Fate). At this point Mazin announced that he wanted to pull out of the project, and was replaced in the credits as a writer by Joe Crombie.

There’s no point beating around the bush: it’s not a good sign when an acclaimed and appreciated professional of Mazin’s caliber decides to back out but, let’s put it this way: the trailer looks interesting and we hope that the excellent moment of cine-video games, in stark contrast to cine-comics, will continue even at this juncture.
