Password managers have gone a long way in protecting users’ online accounts from hackers by storing their passwords securely and making it easier for the users to log in to their accounts safely. Recently, Google Password Manager has come with an added feature of password sharing.

Extending an announcement made in February 2024 during Safer Internet Day, the fresh new version of Google Play Services is the number v24 to the latest Google Play Services update. 20 has, however, the revealed beginning of password sharing by Google Password Manager, though not completely, by Android Authority.

A feature for families.

As stated in the Google support document for this feature, the primary function of the feature is to enable the user to share passwords safely with persons in the family group on Google Password Manager. “Every time you share the password your dear ones shall be provided with a copy easily retrievable in their Google Password Manager,” Google said.

However, it is crucial to point that password sharing can only be done when you live in the same household. This in turn implies that for one to be able to access this feature, it is necessar to form such a group and add members.

For those people who are already, let’s say, covered under a family plan, there should be an option called “share” in Google Password Manager. However, as reported by Android Authority, this feature isn’t enable for Chrome desktop yet, at least not at the time when this article was compiled.

Potential uses

Google has provided some instances to show how this particular feature is utilized. As an instance we could quote the case that “two members in a family who work in separate shifts with a single account to coordinate childcare or a child who gives his parent a key to his school homework.
