In recent weeks, it has been discovered that Microsoft is working on a resolution upscaling system built into Windows 11 and based on the use of artificial intelligence. While it’s already possible to activate some parts of it in Windows 11 preview builds, the official announcement hadn’t come yet. Now, it looks like Microsoft is planning to officially unveil the native Windows 11 upscaler next month, at the GDC conference in San Francisco.

The official program on the GDC website accidentally revealed the existence of DirectSR, which is the super resolution for Windows 11 apps and games. Work graphs are the latest way to make the most of GPU hardware and parallelize workloads. Microsoft will offer a preview of DirectSR, making it easier than ever for game developers to scale support to super resolution on Windows devices. You can already benefit from several resolution scalers manufactured by Nvidia, AMD and Intel. Some of them (such as Nvidia’s) require newer, more powerful hardware, while AMD and Intel’s options also work with older hardware, so it remains to be seen what approach Microsoft will take.
